Evolution Valley

Florence Lake to Evolution Basin

Evolution Valley and Basin are world-class highlights along the John Muir Trail. An approach from the west offers a gradual, forested climb over three days, allowing plenty of time to acclimate. The ascent from Goddard Canyon Junction into Evolution Valley is one of the most breathtaking stretches of trail in the High Sierra.

Duration: 7 nights
Distance: 34 miles plus day hikes

Itinerary Options

Instead of camping at Jackass Meadow, catch the afternoon ferry and camp on the southeastern side of Florence Lake.

Additional day-hike options include Darwin Bench and around The Hermit; however, both require superior route-finding and off-trail navigation skills.

On the return to the trailhead, visit the public hot springs in Blayney Meadow, just south of Muir Trail Ranch. You can also swing by the ranch, though there are no services or amenities for day visitors.

Key Risks

Critters: You’re in bear country. There are strict rules on storing scented items including the need for bear-proof containers. Know before you go and follow all instructions.

Altitude: Monitor participants for any adverse reactions.

Weather: Snow can linger in Evolution Basin.

Water Crossings: Evolution Creek can be difficult to cross early in the season. There’s an alternate crossing available upstream.

Road Conditions: Kaiser Pass Road is a narrow, winding one-lane mountain road. Use caution, take your time, and watch for other vehicles.
