Manzana Creek Trail

Nira Campground to Ray’s Camp

A dirt patch surrounded by grass and shrubs, with a few scattered trees, and a tarp backpacking tent setup in the foreground and several other tents in the background.

This trail follows Manzana Creek, one of the few areas on the California Central Coast with year-round water. In spring, expect wet feet during crossings, and in very wet years the creek may become uncrossable. By fall, the creek bed typically dries, leaves turn color, and the first dependable water is often at Ray’s Camp.

Itinerary Options

Manzana Creek Trail crosses the creek several times on the way to a series of established camps, each with a picnic table and fire ring; some also have a pit toilet. Options include: Lost Valley (1.1 miles from trailhead), Fish Creek (2.7 miles), Ray’s Camp (4.5 miles), Manzana (6 miles), and Manzana Narrows (7 miles). Swimming holes — and reliable water — await at the Narrows.

Key Risks

Water Availability: Check Hike Los Padres for current conditions and make a contingency plan.

Poison Oak: Although the trail is decently clear, there are a few branches in camp and around the creek. Wear pants.

Water Crossings: Big storms are known to swell the creek and make crossings dangerous.

Crowding: Tent sites fill quickly. On spring weekends, start early to secure a good spot for your group.

Logistics

Ray’s Camp is on the small side. Don’t bring more than 8–12 people.

Permits Needed
